TIFFIN, Ohio — A 56-year-old inmate from Tiffin collapsed and died after working out at the Seneca County Jail on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred around 5:59 p.m. as the inmate was doing push-ups with other inmates, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.

Two fellow inmates began administering CPR, continuing until corrections officers and jail medical staff arrived. Medical personnel used an automated external defibrillator (AED) and delivered two shocks in an attempt to revive him. Tiffin Emergency Medical Services took over the efforts, administering two to three additional shocks with their AED.

The inmate was transported by Tiffin Fire & Rescue to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities identified the inmate but have not yet released his name. Preliminary findings indicated no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The body is being sent to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Seneca County Sheriff Fred Stevens expressed condolences to the inmate’s family and friends.
