Six food facilities in Seneca County were cited for critical health code violations during recent inspections conducted by the Seneca County General Health District between mid-March and early April.

The inspections — part of routine oversight of commercial food service operations — found violations ranging from improper cold holding temperatures to uncovered food and missing date markings on ready-to-eat items.

Little Hugo’s — Tiffin

Little Hugo’s, located at 410 W. Market Street in Tiffin, received the most violations of any facility in this round of inspections. A critical control point inspection on March 26 found 1 critical and 2 non-critical violations.

The critical violation involved a prep cooler beside the hand sink registering an air temperature of 49°F. A footlong inside the unit measured 49°F and cheese was at 51°F. Ohio Administrative Code requires cold holding at 41°F or below to prevent bacterial growth.

Non-critical violations cited unclean surfaces inside a reach-in freezer and dirty hood vents above the fryers and flooring behind ice cream machines. Inspectors did note positive observations: hand washing facilities were properly supplied and the person in charge held a food protection certification.

American Table — Fostoria

American Table, at 603 Plaza Drive in Fostoria, was cited for a repeat critical violation during a critical control point inspection on March 19. Inspectors found uncovered food in the cooler and freezer — a contamination prevention issue the facility had been cited for previously. The violation was corrected during the inspection.

Inspectors noted positive observations including proper separation of raw animal foods during storage and proper identification and storage of toxic materials.

Burger King #449 — Fostoria

Burger King #449 at 1059 N. Countyline Street in Fostoria received 1 critical violation during a critical control point inspection on March 19. Inspectors found burger toppings being kept without a cover. The violation was corrected during the inspection.

Inspectors noted positive observations for glove-changing practices and properly supplied hand washing facilities.

Active Nutrition — Tiffin

Active Nutrition at 1560 W. Market Street in Tiffin received 1 critical violation during an inspection on April 7. The ice bin was not being kept covered when not in use, creating a contamination risk.

Circle K #4705636 — Fostoria

Circle K #4705636 at 1245 N. Countyline Road in Fostoria received 1 critical violation during an inspection on April 6. A thermometer in the prep cooler at the grill area was reading 60°F while the actual cooler temperature was 34°F. The inaccurate thermometer was removed and a replacement was being obtained. The violation was corrected during the inspection.

Stiney’s — Tiffin

Stiney’s at 255 Second Avenue in Tiffin received 1 critical violation during an inspection on April 2. Inspectors found thawed meat in the refrigerator without proper date marking. Ohio code requires ready-to-eat, time/temperature controlled for safety foods to be date marked to track safe holding periods. The violation was corrected during the inspection.
